Chapter 2
Lakshmi Road, Poona, 1945

Independence

"I had worked in sales situations for long enough to know how to make a customer feel important. If someone got particularly annoyed at my persistence and ordered me to leave, I would do so, and simply wait for a few days before going back and quietly trying again. I never allowed the feeling of rejection to influence my next action, but kept calmly focussed on my objective instead."

Arriving in Pune to work as a domestic servant in the home of a relative, young Pralhad's struggles continued. Initially surrounded by the sounds of a strange new language, he would soon master Marathi to such an extent that today while making speeches and giving interviews, he is even more comfortable in Marathi than in English.

The country was on the verge of Independence and many important changes were about to occur. In this chapter, read how they impacted the lives of Pralhad and his family.
